haha I completely understand you!
I got halfway through Northanger Abbey and I chucked the book across the room. My mum was incredulous, as she's never seen me do this before (I try to keep my emotions hidden when reading a book!). She asked why I threw it, and I said I wasn't going to read anymore unless John Thorpe pulled his act together. HE INFURIATED ME!!!
|
Hahaha! I wanted to throw the book across the room too, but it's the complete works in one book, so it probably would have put a hole in the wall. To be honest, I don't think I have ever been so angry at a character.

Henry Tilney is gorgeous. But my order is still Darcy, Knightley, Wentworth, Brandon, Tilney and then Edmund. The others have so much more credability to them! |
For me it's Brandon, Tilney, then Darcy, but those are the only ones I'm familiar with right now. _________________

Just you wait girl. You haven't seen anything yet. Captain Wentworth? The only person I know who can hold a grudge and look and be sexy while doing it. Persuasions is so beautiful. It's classic. _________________

Persuasions is next on my list, actually. Captain Wentworth, here I come!

Do you find, when reading Northanger Abbey, that the language and the way Austen has written NA are eerily similar to modern language? I mean, it's still in 19th century English and everything, but woah i t's way more understandable in terms of the language then the others. I mean, Sense and Sensibilty was one where you have to read EVERY line, you can't do that skimmy thing. |
According to The Jane Austen Book Club (and I guess other sources, as well) NA was the first book she wrote, but the last published. That might be why it reads differently - she wasn't as experienced with writing. _________________

I've read some of Jane Austen books but not all. I need to read Persuasion. I've been hearing that its a fabulous book.
I'd have to say that, so far, its Darcy, Knightley, Edmund, Edward and then Brandon

Persuasion...
I don't know what chapter I'm in right now, but the party just went to Lyme. Everyone is so insensitive to Anne! Poor thing! I'm in tears half the time I'm reading it! _________________

I started Persuasion a couple of days ago but stopped reading soon...I dunno why..perhaps because of the frustration I always get at the beginning of JA books when I can't tell all the people she mentions apart, or because I was too exhausted having just finished Mansfield Park..Reading JA books always takes a lot of energy expecially not being a native speaker!
Having you guys praise the book so much, I guess I have to coninue reading it =)

Oh, that must be tough, not being a native speaker and reading her.
I'm the same way when starting her novels. I'll read it, but not really comprehend anything until I'm hooked. _________________

Yeah it is tough, but you get used to JA's style of writing and the old language and then it gets easier.
Great that I'm not the only one being confused

JA's style is confusing - it took me four goes to actually get into P&P when I first started reading JA. But while it's confusing, it's very eloquent, very witty. That's why I like it so much!
Diamonds - that musn't be easy, with the whole native tongue thing. Kudos to you for at least trying! _________________

So, Hannah, I do love Captain Wentworth. That letter he wrote to Anne! *swoon* _________________

Wasn't that just gorgeous? I loved their relationship, the way that they knew each other. Like when he took the kids off her back? The letter was gorgeous of course. That's my favourite ending so far, in any of the Jane Austens _________________

| I'm reading Persuasion right now, I also have Pride and Prejudice and Sense and sensibility to read after. Previously I got 1/2 way through Emma and gave up because it was beginning to be a pain taking it back to the library about 4 times!
