As we all know, Carlisle was born in London in the 1600s, and he grew up in London. And he was turned into a vampire in London. So I was wondering, does Carlisle have a British accent? Is that one of the things that stays the same when you get turned into a vampire?
You see, we automatically assume that Carlisle has an American accent because everyone around him does - and because he travelled to the New World.

But shouldn't he have a British accent?

Which begs the question, that if he is supposed to have an accent, then shouldn't Peter Francelli have one in the movie?

Just wanted your thoughts and opinions!

I always "hear" him with a British accent, but he's been in the U.S. for a long time, so he probably doesn't have one anymore. Also, he would probably drop it to fit in better.

Perhaps, he did lose his accent because he's been in America for a very long time, and he is always in contact with humans working in the hospital. And perhaps, he just takes an american accent, because it poses less questions, ppl wouldnt' ask as many questions where he is from.

Though, I would lovvee carisle to have a British accent, i always though he did as well. sigh, i always thought British accents were so sexy haha

I honestly never read Carlisle as having a British accent, but all of the facts about him living and becoming a vampire in England make sense. I agree with the others though, he could probalby still muster up a British accent if he wanted to, but living in the states as probably made it wear off over the centuries.

Plus, if Carlisle is that old, imagine how intelligent he is. He might even know various other languages that SM didn't really delve into because he strayed from the plot.

Or maybe I'm just being creative. Razz

I don't really think of any book characters having accents - which is odd since I LOVE them. but not even with HP, when they all British. But on to Carlisle - I read somewhere in an interview with Stephenie Meyer (wish I could find where) that he doesn't have an accent in every day life, like at the hospital, but that he slips back into at home, where he is comfortable and doesn't have to hide. Makes sense to me since it would make it more complex for the Cullens' story if Carlisle somehow had a British accent even though he can't even pass for thirty - which then begs the question of when he came to America, etc.,? Same thing with Jasper - if he and Rosalie are supposed to be "twins" - shouldn't she have a Southern accent as well? Then I read the Peter isn't doing an accent at all - just using proper English and all.
